Case Study
Customs House
Renovating a working heritage building with zero downtime.
A Two-Part Challenge
Built in the late 1800s, Customs House in Brisbane, Australia, served as working commercial offices for a hundred years before becoming home to multiple high-end event spaces.
Earmarked for significant restoration work on its domed roof, this site required an access solution that solved two challenges:
- The delicate, heritage nature of the domed structure could not take the point loads of a standard scaffold or be penetrated for ties
- With a busy events season in full swing, the venue couldn’t afford a single day of downtime, so shoring down through the floors wasn’t an option
The Custom Taurus Solution
A specialized Taurus cantilevered access system was engineered that carried its load out and back to the building’s capable structure, lifting the working platforms clear of the fragile dome. The supporting truss was designed and fabricated in-house, then pre-assembled and trial-fitted off-site.
This allowed the scaffolding installers to be confident in the specific solution before taking it to site, turning what could have been a high-risk night install into something that was executed safely and efficiently.
Installed in 5 nights and dismantled in 3, with zero interruption to the venue’s public-facing operations.
